Holding the paddle correctly changes everything.
If your grip slips or is worn, you lose control, precision, and even confidence in your game. Therefore, knowing how to properly apply a grip or overgrip is something every padel player should understand.
And don't worry: you don't have to be a handyman. Just follow these steps and use a good product, grips, and overgrips.
Grip or overgrip? Which do I need?
-
Grip : This is the base coating. It usually comes pre-installed on the racket when you buy it. If it's very worn, you can remove it and replace it with a new one.
-
Overgrip : This is the type of grip you wear over your grip and is changed most frequently. It improves grip and feel, and absorbs sweat.
👉 The most common thing is to leave the original grip and change the overgrip every few games .
How to apply an overgrip correctly
What do you need:
-
1 new overgrip
-
Scissors (optional)
-
A little patience (only the first time 😅)
Step by step:
-
Remove the old overgrip (if present).
-
Unroll the new overgrip and locate the thinner end (the one that is usually beveled or pointed).
-
Start at the base of the handle (where the cap is). Place the thin end lightly over the edge and hold it in place with your finger or an adhesive strip.
-
Roll upwards in a spiral , slightly overlapping each turn to cover the handle without leaving gaps.
-
Adjust the tension : not too loose (it will wrinkle), not too tight (it will be difficult to grip properly).
-
Reach the flat part of the cuff , cut off any excess and secure with the adhesive tape that is usually included.
Done! You now have better grip and more control at every point.
